چکیده

We report results of numerical studies of the integer quantum Hall effect in a tight binding model on a two-dimensional square lattice with non-interacting electrons, in the presence of a random potential as well as a uniform magnetic field applied perpendicular to the lattice. We consider field magnitudes such that the area per flux quantum is commensurate with the lattice structure. Topological properties of the single electron wave functions are used to identify current carrying states that are responsible for the quantized Hall conductance. We study the interplay between the magnetic field and the disorder, and find a universal pattern with which the current carrying states are destroyed by increasing disorder strength, and the system driven into an insulating state. We also discuss how to interpolate results of lattice models to the continuum limit. The relationship to previous theoretical and experimental studies of quantum Hall-insulator transitions in strongly disordered

Recent experiments on ultracold atomic gases in an optical lattice potential have produced a Mott insulating state of Rb atoms. This state is stable to a small applied potential gradient (an ‘electric’ field), but a resonant response was observed when the potential energy drop per lattice spacing (E), was close to the repulsive interaction energy (U) between two atoms in the same lattice potent...

Magnetoresistance measurements are presented for a strained p-SiGe quantum well sample where the density is varied through the B=0 metal-insulator transition. The close relationship between this transition, the high field Hall insulator transition and the filling factor ν=3/2 insulating state is demonstrated. The strained p-type SiGe system exhibits, in addition to the normal integer quantum Ha...

Interacting lattice electrons with disorder in two dimensions: Numerical evidence for a metal-insulator transition with a universal critical conductivity

The Coulomb interaction between the electrons and the presence of disorder both strongly affect the properties of solids.1–5 Namely, electronic correlations and randomness are separate driving forces behind metal-insulator transitions (MITs) due to the localization and delocalization of particles. While the electronic repulsion may lead to a Mott-Hubbard MIT,6 the scattering of noninteracting p...
